Cold Water Plunge

What is it?

A cold water plunge is a cryo-therapy used to treat a variety of health concerns. Popularized by professional athletes, fitness gurus, and celebrities in recent years, cold baths have been practiced for centuries. A cold water plunge is exactly what you need for all your post workout and general health and wellness. Use our Cold Water Plunge at Total Rejuvenation today and start your ice bath journey today.

1. Reduces Inflammation and Swelling

In a cold water plunge, the cold temperature causes your blood vessels to narrow. As your blood vessels narrow your blood flow to your muscles decreases, reducing inflammation and swelling. Some research shows that cold therapy could be more effective in lowering post-exercise inflammation than compression socks.

3. Aid Muscle Recovery

The blood vessel restriction that is initiated by the getting into the cold water plunge sends your blood into your internal organs. Once you step out of the water your vessels widen, increasing circulation. The increased circulation introduces nutrient-rich blood back through your system, helping to reduce metabolic waste build-ups.

5. Improves Mental Health

The exposure to the extreme temperatures of the cold water plunge can improve your mental health as well. Studies have shown that time spent in a cold water plunge can lead to experiencing less stress, anxiety, and depression after consistent practice. The activation of our nervous system triggers our stress response. Over time and consistent use, our bodies adapt to stress and result in an improved overall mood.

2. Relieves Sore Muscles and Chronic Pain

Using a cold water plunge can both relieve sore muscles and aid chronic pain. By reducing inflammation and slowing nerve signaling, pain and soreness perception lowers. Cold water plunges are also shown to reduce delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) after exercise. When it comes to chronic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, gout, and fibromyalgia, evidence has shown that cold water baths can help to ease that pain.

4. Supports Immunity

The combination of cold water therapy, deep breathing, and meditation support healthy immune systems. The same restriction and dilation process that aids our muscle recovery through increasing circulation and reintroducing nutrient dense blood into the system is the same process that supports immunity. By cleaning and recirculating our blood the cold water plunge boosts our immunity.

What to expect…

Get your body prepared to take the plunge by taking a few deep, slow belly breaths. As you step into the cold water the most important thing to focus on is your breath. Avoiding that initial gasp by maintaining a consistent breathing pace will help you stay in the plunge for a longer period of time. Once you have entered the water fully it is important to pay attention to the time spent in the water.

Once you get into the Cold Water Plunge room we will talk you through everything. If you would like for us to remain in the room with you to talk you through breathing exercises we can. If not, there is a lock on the door for your privacy and everything you need will be provided for you.

To receive full physical benefit from the plunge, all you need is two minutes, but any time in the water will be beneficial for you. If you are up for the challenging yourself and pushing your mind and body further, you can stay in the plunge for up to 10 minutes. To get the most out of your plunge you can dunk your whole body from head to toe into the water, but everyone can take it at their own pace.

Health Conditions and Precautions

A cold water plunge can pose a risk to individuals with certain different health conditions. If you experience any of the following conditions or have any concerns we recommend talking to your doctor. Cold water can shock our system and be dangerous to individuals with heart conditions by putting too much stress on the heart. Additionally, spending too much time in cold water can lead to hypothermia. Staying in the cold water plunge too long can increase a risk of hypothermia. Make sure to time your cold water plunge sessions so as to not stay in too long and to pay attention to how you feel. If you notice any major changes, the pigment of your skin or start shivering aggressively, make sure to get out of the plunge immediately.
